How to Survive a Long Distance Relationship

Hi guys!

Thought I’d write about a specific topic this time. Thank you for those who submitted questions through my DM. Hopefully I answered yours in here!

This past year Lucas and I did long distance 4 times due to me going on exchange, me going to Vancouver… basically I ruined everything. BUT ANYWAY… Even though long distance intervals weren’t as long as some other couples, this past year has definitely taught me a thing or two about LDRs so I thought I would share. And honestly, in this day and age, I wouldn’t be surprised if you’ve already done some long-distancing yourself or will experience it in the future. With so many school and job opportunities popping up all over the world, it’s hard say where you’ll end up.

Before I get started, just throwing a disclaimer out there: I’m no long distance expert. In fact I’m not even a relationship expert. I can’t count the number of times I’ve said “I hate you” and then regretted it 5 seconds later and then Lucas feeds me then I’m good again #truestory. But anyway read on if you think my experience is credible (can’t promise anything though… LOL). If not, then gtfo 🙂

WITHOUT FURTHER ADO… these are just some of the things that I’ve found useful in my own personal LDR (aka what avoided fights the most LOL):

1. THE 3 MOST IMPORTANT TIMES OF YOUR DAY

When you wake up, your “big event” of the day, and when you go to sleep.

This almost goes without saying but the two most important times to communicate to your significant other is the minute your eyes open from whatever you were dreaming about and the moment you’re about to put your phone down for good. Nothing gets a person (or more specifically, the person you’re dating) more livid than waking up and not getting any messages. Or you suddenly going awol without warning. I’m not saying you need a whole ritual or speech written, I just mean a simple hello and goodbye (okay don’t actually say “goodbye” or that’s probably gonna cause fights too) to give them a heads up.

When I say “big event” of the day, I’m referring to one thing in your day that is different than every other day. If you work Monday-Friday, you don’t need to tell them “hey babe, I’m working today… again. Just like yesterday. And the day before.” Like dude, we get it. you just need to tell them if there is something about that day that is different. FOR EXAMPLEEEE…  if you’re seeing your friends after work that day *cough* Lucas *cough* LOL I’m just kidding not really. Or if that day you’re actually taking a break and doing nothing. Yes, doing nothing is also something you could tell them.

I’m not saying that you have to “report” to your significant other – that is not the point of communicating these things. The whole purpose of this is to keep them up to date as to what you’re doing – sort of as if they’re in the same city as you.

2. have something to look forward to

This part might not always be possible, but I found that when there’s a time to look forward to it always helps.

This just means knowing when you’ll actually be together next. When will you see each other again? Christmas? Easter? Thanksgiving? etc. Even if you don’t have a specific date or your flight date booked, just knowing a ballpark of when you’ll see each other is super important.

On a related note, it’s also healthy to talk about the end game of your long distance altogether. What I mean by that is… there’s a difference between when you’re seeing each other next and when you’re going to finally be together forever.

3. create a bucket list for the next time you see each other

When you’re in a LDR, your imagination has to take over. If ya know what I mean 😉 #TryingToKeepThisPG13. But tying in my last point, another thing that helps let the time pass is creating a bucket list together of all the things you would do once you see each other. This is even more important for people who don’t know when they’ll be able to see their SOs (significant other) so it gives them something else to look forward to. For example, for Lucas and I, we talked about all the activities/hikes we would do once he gets to Vancouver. I find that when you’re thinking about these activities, it takes your mind off just how long it’ll be the next time you see them.

4. DO NOT let facetime/skype take over your life

Just because you’re in a LDR does not mean you have to spend every second of your free time on FaceTime. Personally, I found that the healthiest way is to find a balance. Lucas and I actually preferred that we didn’t FaceTime every single day but when we both have the time or those times when we really want/need to speak to each other over FaceTime. The key is to not make your FaceTime/Skype sessions feel like a burden. When you schedule it every single day, it could feel like it is holding you back on some of your other priorities, which could also result in resentment towards your SO. But if you are the type to Skype every day, one tip could be to not let every single one of your sessions drag out for hours. The last thing you want is to force communication or for your partner to be overly tired but are too afraid to say no. You still want to keep each other on your toes and feel the excitement every time you each other on the screen.

5. UNDERSTAND THE PHASES OF A LONG DISTANCE RELATIONSHIP

I like to relate a LDR to being hungry (LOL I would relate everything to food). You know when you’re really really hungry and you still don’t get to eat, eventually that hunger dies and your stomach just feels numb and you’re not really feeling it anymore? Then when you know you’re about to go eat (eg. after you’ve ordered your food) you get this rush of emotions where you feel even more impatient and agitated? (Maybe it’s just me… LOL).

ANYWAY what I’m trying to say is that a LDR is sort of like that. In the beginning you feel super deprived and you’re like WHYYYYY IS THIS HAPPENINGGGGGG. But after several weeks you start to get the hang of it and you don’t feel like you’re dying anymore #DramaQueenHour. But once you know when you’re going to see each other again, the week before seems to get really tough again and fights happen more easily (yep, this happened to us 4 times).

Understanding this timeline is important because when you feel extremely down, you know that you’ll start getting used to it in awhile so knowing that in and of itself is uplifting.

6. take advantage of your DEAD times

Every single one of us have dead times every single day. That is, times when there’s  literally nothing to do but for a short amount of time. Eg. when you’re waiting in line for your coffee at Starbucks. When you’re waiting for the bus/train to come. When you’re waiting for your friend who’s always late (LOL that’s me #oops). You get the point. I love taking advantage of this time by calling Lucas or my friends and family back at home. If they don’t have time to talk to me, I like to use this time to send snapchats, leave voice messages, or even writing a longer text to let them know I’m thinking about them.

7. consider doing netflix sharing

found this image on the internet LOOOOL that’s actually so funny.

If you’re one of those couples that love to watch shows together… HAVE NO FEAR. There’s actually an application for Chrome that allows you to share your Netflix screen. I downloaded it but personally haven’t had the chance to use it.  But here it is!! 🙂

BOTTOM LINE: should you try it???

To answer this question you would have to really understand your situation. What I mean by that is if you’re doing long distance for short periods of times (eg. I did long distance 2 months at a time but would see each other after that), then the answer is probably. 2-3 months go by pretty fast so if you’re going to see each other every summer, winter, and spring break, this is very doable but it still takes a lot of effort on both ends. You should also consider whether or not there is an end to this long distance.

LOL

I haven’t done these “advice” posts before so let me know what you think. If you’ve been in one before… was this post relatable? What would you add?
But either way, I hope this helped!

Day on the Coast

Drove to my friend Emily’s on Saturday night so we could all catch the ferry together to stay at Jon’s cottage and go jet skiing the next day (YAYYYYYY) #neverbeenjetskiingbefore. Of course me being stupid me left the car lights on when I left so I was feeling kinda bummed on the ferry #WhyAmILikeThis. Thankfully I had good company so that didn’t last very long because soon enough we were drinking my sorrows away #DramaQueenHour.

This past few weeks has really made me appreciate FRESH AIR. For those who don’t know what I’m talking about… there was smoke all over PNW because of wildfires so the air quality wasn’t the greatest – you couldn’t even see the clouds! 😦 Didn’t even want to go hiking because why in the world would I hike for hours and not see the view I came for?! #Waste #LetsBeReal.  Anyway, it was nice that it finally rained Saturday night because it finally cleared the air and it made Sunday so much more enjoyable being able to see the views of the coast.

I love you, blue skies

When we finally got to the jet skis I decided to borrow one of Jon’s wet suits because I’m slightly very afraid of the cold. It actually didn’t turn out too bad so if you’re ever thinking of going jet skiing you could also go without. I only know that it wasn’t too bad because eventually I had to pee so I got out of the wet suit and jumped in the ocean #TMI #Sorry.

me and my west coast lit police ❤
behind the scenes.

Don’t know what’s more fun about jet skiing – being the person in power and driving like a maniac or getting thrown off into the ocean. Either way I’m buying a jet ski one day :D.

On a totally separate note, I finally ate a burger – haven’t had one in YEARS #jk #probablyjustone #DQH. And let me tell you – that Big Mac sauce (available at a Costco near you!) is AH-MAZING. Could eat this all day.

And for those who care (even if you don’t I’m force feeding you information anyway), my car lights were still on when I finally got back to Emily’s house on Sunday. A full 24 hours and the car never ran out of battery. Moral of the story, buy a Honda Civic #1fannow #ImmuneToLisaFuckUps.

Thanks for reading! Hope everyone had a great weekend.

Love,
Lisa

HI GUYS!!!! 🙂

After being in school for more than half my life (17 years?! holy shit that’s like a full angry teenager), I can’t believe I’m finally done school. F.I.NA.L.L.Y. I feel like I’ve been waiting for this moment ever since I got put into a group project in grade 3 and had to deal with humans #DramaQueenHour #YesDramaQueenHourIsBack. Will I miss school? Uh… to some extent. I’ll definitely miss organized hang out sessions (some people call it class) with my friends, being able to sleep in because my class schedule is based on my sleeping and eating timetable, and of course the “let’s have a chill night”s that turn into black outs over the weekend. But the parts I won’t miss? Having to work even when classes are over and feeling like nothing is ever completely “done” because even if you’ve studied enough – is it still enough doe? #theanxietyisreal

Anyway, would I pursue another degree? PROBABLY NOT. HECK NO. As a person with real ADHD issues, I don’t think my brain is engineered to sit still for more than 5 minutes so I’m probably not gonna pay for another few years of putting my brain through that.

NEXT CHAPTER

So if I’m not going to school then WTF am I doing with my life? #WhoGivesAShitBesidesMyMomButImTellingYouAnyway. The first step of my next chapter is probably dealing with my own expenses since there’s no more Bank of Mom & Dad. That means working full-time starting in September and living the rush hour life just like everybody else #Basic. With a more steady schedule in my life, I feel like it would be easier to manage other aspects of my life (this is really starting to sound like a college essay rather than a blog post but anyway). Besides, life is really just about improving yourself right…?????? (I say this every year but I end up staying the same but whatever it’s the thought that counts). That means eating healthier, exercising more, yaddi yada, it’s all the same stuff. But what else is new?

MOVING IN WITH PUKAS LUCAS!!! #Pukas2Lucas

We recently started furniture shopping and organizing our room… What that really means is I do all the furniture picking and Lucas does all the organizing because of his severe OCD.

*What feels like every night*
Lucas: babe can we clean
Me: … … … NO BABE ALL WE DO IS CLEAN.

We also realized very quickly that we I have a lot of shit clothes and someday down the road I’m gonna get that Carrie Bradshaw closet… OR EVEN THE ONE FROM PRINCESS DIARIES – either or is fine I’m not complaining ;).

The best part about school being over is the free time in the evenings (and for now… 24/7) so I’m finally able to have time to pursue the things that I have real interest in. Such as writing on this blog. Being able to write has always been an outlet but with such a busy past few years, I’ve been putting this on the back burner.

HOPEFULLY I’M BACK FOR GOOD. #ConsistencyisKey #SomethingIDontUsuallyHave.

As usual, thanks for reading :). Until next week 😉

Lisa

MUST DO – SURFING IN PORTUGAL

Got a couple of questions after posting about surfing on Instagram so I thought I’d make a post! Granted, I was definitely not the person who discovered this (thank you Alex, Emily W, Emily C, and Callie for the suggestion and Monisha for booking for us!!!) so I’m just here to relay the message so that all humans on earth can enjoy approximately $20CAN (it’s actually 15 euros) worth of 2 hours of surf rentals and lessons!!! (If you know something better and you’re hiding it from the world – I hate you.)

PS. Surfing in Tofino (Canada) is about $100 for the exact same thing so yes, this is a big deal.

HOW AND WHERE TO BOOK

Click here to Cascais Surf School & Camp’s website to see their rates and follow their instructions (in other words simply send them an email and see when they’re available!). I also realized after visiting the page that we got our rates even cheaper because we were students on exchange (#Erasmus LOL) but it’s cheap nonetheless!!

Not to boost their ego but they also have a 5 star rating on tripadvisor so…

WHERE IT IS…

The beach itself is not in Lisbon exactly – you have to train your ass to the beach. I’ve even left a few instructions:

#1 – Get from wherever you are (Airbnb, Hostel, Hotel, the street, the bush, etc) to the station: Cais do Sodré

tip: I would Uber there because Ubers in Lisbon are dirt cheap especially if you split with people. If not, WALK. It’s a nice scenery (not that I would know with all the Ubers but from what I’ve seen around and heard from other people…) and plus the city is not that big!

#2 – Buy a round-trip train ticket to Carcavelos (unless they’ve changed the destination, but this is where we were told to go)

From there, the beach is about a 5 minute walk!

OVERALL EXPERIENCE

Instructors were absolutely amazing (as you can see from their trip advisor review). They were extremely helpful and they don’t give up on you – EVEN IF YOU’RE GIVING UP ON YOURSELF LOL. They also learn your name within the first 5 minutes and they say it with their cute Portuguese accents (Liiiizaaaa!!!!). Which also means that if you screw up they yell your name in the middle of the ocean #NoLie #ButInACuteAndFunnyWay.

eg. *me trying to hop on my surfboard*
“NOOOO LIZZZAAAAAAA, THERE ARE PEOPLE IN FRONT OF YOU”

It was really fun (how basic can that statement be) – definitely lots of work but so worth it! 1000/1000 would recommend to friend. And non-friends.

post surfing sangria!! ❤
“Gourmet burger” with out the bread and an egg?? #portugesestyle LOL

FAQ (that I made up by myself so who knows)

ISN’T IT COLD?

Yes m’dear. The water is cold especially if you’re not going in the middle of summer in 30 degree weather. But have no fear, wet suits are here!! No lie, these wet suits will keep you so warm that you won’t even notice the coldness of the water.

ISN’T IT TIRING?

Also a yes. The three of us were sore for two days afterwards. One of us was sore all over, one of us was sore upper body, and the other one was sore just in the shoulders (not pointing at who is who ;D). So it really depends on who you are but don’t underestimate the work out that this gives you!

WHAT TO WEAR/BRING

Wear your bathing suit underneath already. Do not think to change into your bathing suit because the minute you get to that parking lot they already have wet suits and surfboards ready for you.

Bring:

  • flip flops
  • towel
  • SUNSCREEN
  • Hair tie (I was originally going to say for girls but with all the man-buns these days who knows)
  • GREAT ATTITUDE 😀 (I sound like a mother)

That’s about it, folks!

Hope y’all have a great time surfing in Portugal like we did!!!!

Love,

Lisa

Milan Fashion Week

Doing exchange in Milan means one thing… MILAN FASHION WEEK!!! *Cue tweens me at JBiebs concert screams*

But seriously, I prepared for this moment ever since I submitted my application for exchange  #EagerBeaver. I even bought my outfit months in advance and just took off the tags yesterday #FashionOlymmpics?. The only thing that didn’t go according to plan was my 6 pack that never showed up #OhWell #MaybeNextYear.

milan fashion week 2017
lugged this cape around for months just to wear for one day #lisalogic

I was traveling in the beginning of fashion week so I wasn’t able to catch Gigi, Aimee Song, and the other bloggers on site (I know, I had one job) but we came right in time for the last day 😀 #thankgod #MyOutfitWouldGoToWaste. Thankfully, Monisha also just got back from traveling and needed to check out MFW as well so we headed over to the Duomo right before class.

milan fashion week 2017

So how did we get in??? #FAQ

Long story short we showed up armed so they pretty much had to let us in.

Just kidding, but the real story’s pretty anticlimactic.

Basically we walked to the entrance and there were guards up at the front. We saw one girl walk up to security and said, “my name should be on that list” – which it was, and she got inside. I felt pretty discouraged but another group of girls looked like they were talking to the guards and he didn’t pull out any type of list, so we decided to give it a try. We simply asked, “can we head inside?” He looks at his partner, and turned to us and said yes. Once we got to entrance #2, Monisha and I kept saying to each other, “act cool, act cool… gotta pretend like we belong”. Later, a woman approached us and asked if we were press, bloggers, students, or whatever (okay she didn’t say whatever but she might as well have because who are we to be there?). We answered “students abroad” but she heard “from a blog” so she encouragingly led us to our seats. I mean technically this is going on a blog… 😉

Moral of the story: Lie??? or accidentally lie???

milan fashion week 2017

We were able to catch the last show of the entire week – Daizy Shely’s Fall/Winter 2017-2018 collection.

milan fashion week 2017

I wanted to vlog my entire experience but I didn’t gather enough clips so here’s a gif I learned how to make just for this blog post LOL:

and this one:

The last walk

The entire show is exactly the way you dreamed it would be: The venue was grand with classic European architecture. There’s also classical music in the background before the show commences with photographers and press everywhere, especially towards the end of the catwalk:

fullsizerender-jpg-6

The show itself was not very long but there was a lot to take in. There were a lot of details on each of the outfits so it was almost overwhelming as my first time trying to take in everything: the venue, the models, the music, etc. What was almost as amazing to watch was the audience. The entire audience was extremely dressed up, sunglasses in their faces, clutches in hand, and speaking a bunch of different languages.

milan fashion week 2017

When the show was over, everyone took the opportunity to take pictures in the venue. INCLUDING US OF COURSE 😀

Angle #1

We were really lucky and found someone that took photos for us in all different kinds of angles. This is the type of people we need to surround ourselves with :’) #MakesMeTear #Grateful

milan fashion week 2017
Angle #2. This guy rocks.

Maybe next time we’ll get an invite and not have to accidentally lie our way through??? LOL #OneCanDream

PS. For people thinking of sneaking in: make sure you dress the part, you never know what’s going to happen! They’re also more inclined to let you in if you look like you’re part of it!

Lisa
