It’s Monday!!!!! you know what that means 😉 #WorstDayEver but at least you have THIS post to look forward to right?!?!?! 😉
Not to remind you every damn week (but I’m gonna until it sticks), if you are tuning in for the first time, I’ve started a food series where I write about one of my favourite restaurants (every Monday 9pm EST) that includes my pictures and personal recommendations. And yes, only the favourites will make it on to these blog posts so if I don’t like it, I won’t write about it #ItsADogEatDogWorld. Anyway, for more information, check out my first post on Nomé Izakaya where you can get dollar oysters every Tues & Wednesdays and hands down one of my favourite restaurants in the GTA.
This episode is going to be another photogenic place with amazing food (seriously the best combination)…
Café Cancan seriously has their shit together. This is one of those restaurants where you walk in and you’re like YAAASSS. Because you can honestly tell that every little thing was thoroughly thought of. A+ for effort if you ask me. Even their washrooms are adorable (don’t have a picture for y’all, I’m sorry). Not only is this place beautiful on the outside, it is also beautiful on the inside :’) aka the food is amazing (duh or else I wouldn’t be writing about it), but also the décor is on point. Btw, this is a French restaurant.
Before we start officially, let me begin with a disclaimer which is the fact that I’ve only gone here once (because I just discovered it and ate there so I can’t hold it in anymore … I gotta share). So I can’t give you the best best list of recommendations (but the beauty is that each time I go, I’ll come back and update this list!) but I can definitely tell you the food I’ve already had and some of the things I want to try in the future.
This time, I went there for lunch (not brunch), but the next time I go, I’m definitely going to come when they’re serving brunch (only on weekends) and dinner.
MUST READ & ESSENTIAL DETAILS:
Located @ Spadina & Harbord – not exactly right at the intersection but v close!
If you are driving, there a bunch of street parking.. and here’s the best part… IT’S FREE! (thank mighty God)
Reservations allowed – they’re really good about it!
Exact address: 89 Harbord Street, Toronto, ON, M5S 1G5
WHAT I GOT:
Since it’s a French restaurant and I went with Lucas, I knew he wanted to try the escargots but it’s only offered at dinner… but thankfully the wait staff was nice enough to ask the kitchen and they made it for us at lunch anyway.
Roast Beef Sandwich
Escargots – THIS WAS AMAZINGGG omg. We got bread to go along with it and we ate every last drop. If you’ve never tried escargots I highly recommend trying it here!
If you’ve ever tried brunch or dinner here, please let me know your recommendations! 😀 I would love to hear them.
Welcome to the 3rd episode of my weekly Food Posts #GetaweiFood and #GetaweiFoodTO (follow this hashtag on Instagram, y’all). To understand what this is, check out my first blog post here that explains a little more about these series. Also don’t forget to check out the last post which was a fantastic brunch spot called Baddies!
Remember that these food posts will occur every Monday at 9pm EST! Turn on notifications on my Instagram to keep posted.
Anyway, getting to this week’s post… I’m introducing to you
THE. BEST. RAMEN. IN. TORONTO.
(my opinion of course haha there might be better ones according to other people but… are you reading their blog? Yeah didn’t think so. #SassyMondays)
This week’s special guest is my absolute favourite ramen spot in all of Toronto. I’ve been to so many ramen places including the top ones like Momofuku,Kinton, Sansotei, etc, but this restaurant I’m about to introduce you guys is BY FAR the winner in my eyes for the best ramen. Don’t believe me? This is also the only ramen place that has ever been able to surpass a 4.5 rating (currently sitting at 4.7) on Google with close to 800 reviews!!!!!!
Introducing… (not really but just broadcasting the message here)… RAMEN ISSHIN!!!!!!!!!!!!
Before I continue, I would like to say a special thanks to my amazing friend Lisha Fan for showing me this restaurant and taking me there first :’). I didn’t even take snaps/pictures my first time because it was just so damn good I scarfed it down.
WHY YOU SHOULD LOVE IT:
Their noodles are absolutely unreal and it’s nothing like the other places I’ve tried
The soup base is also Roll-Your-Eyes-Back amazing
Their vegetarian options are BOMB. If you’re a vegetarian and you’ve been sad that you haven’t been able to try out ramen… do not fear. This is the best place you will ever find for vegetarian ramen!
The staff here is also very attentive and friendly. The service is great!
Downtown Toronto – Bathurst & College
Exact Address = 421 College Street, Toronto, ON M5T 1T1 (again, I don’t know why you would want to have the postal code but here it is)
NO RESERVATIONS ANYTIME
Wait time is typically around 15-30 minutes depending on:
Your party size
If you’re willing to sit on the counter / bar, if you’re willing to share a table, or if you only want actual seats
But not to worry, you can wait indoors since it’s like -234873958 degrees right now #Toronto
WHAT I’VE TRIED
***Disclaimer: these are my personal favourites and suggestions
So before I give you a point-form version that we all love to see, I just want to say that I’ve been here 3 times. In total, I’ve tried 5 different dishes. To me, there was a clear winner and what really set this place apart from other ramen places was their Kotteri Shoyu Ramen (I’ve attached pictures of their menu below). Everything about that dish was amazing – the noodles & the broth as well as the toppings that are included.
the KOTTERI SHOYU RAMEN is by far the BEST RAMEN i’ve ever had!!!
The other items I’ve tried on the menu were also good but I wouldn’t say that they were my favourite and those dishes didn’t make this restaurant stand out to me as much as the Shoyu Ramen.
RAMENS I’VE TRIED:
Kotteri Shoyu Ramen – YOU HAVE TO GET THIS
Spicy Miso Ramen
Black Tan Tan Noodle
In depth review:
1// Kotteri Shoyu Ramen
Don’t know how many more times I can say this except for the fact that this is literally the best thing I’ve ever had in my life. It’s literally my go-to ramen when I come here. The toppings are great, the soup base is amazing – not to salty but really flavourful, and the noodles are like no other ramen places (in a very good way!)
2// Spicy Miso Ramen
This was the most suggested item from the restaurant itself. Don’t get me wrong it’s still good but it’s not as great as the other one in my opinion!! I got Lucas to try this one and the Kotteri Shoyu Ramen and he definitely agrees that the Kotteri is what makes this restaurant special whereas this one was pretty average. However, definitely give this a try if you really like miso base or if you’re craving spicy.
3// Black Tan Tan Noodle
This dish was interesting because you were able to grind the black sesame seeds and pour it into the soup base yourself. However, what I didn’t like about this dish was that it was pricier than the classic ramens ($13.80 rather than $11 something) and it didn’t include as many toppings – it didn’t have egg, seaweed, etc #WhatIsUpWithThatCmonMan. The soup base for me was also a little to salty for my liking so when I got this to try I immediately regretted not getting the one I usually get RIP 😥 #DramaQueenHour.
4// Shoyu Tsuk’emen
This is their “dip ramen”. Basically the soup on the left is not only SUPER HOT but there is only very little quantity of it. The idea is that you eat the ramen by dipping into the soup rather than eating it together. The noodles here are thicker and much chewier than your classic ramen-in-soup. I got this really to try it out but I didn’t actually like it too much because I’m more into eating the noodles and drinking the soup at the same time. Also, just like the Black Tan Tan Noodles, this dish was also on the saltier side which I didn’t like. AND the noodles were on the colder side since it’s not in the soup itself so overall the dish was kind of cold. I would recommend trying this more for the experience or if you really like dip ramen but overall this was not a favourite of mine.
I’ve also tried their vegetarian ramen (just a few bites from Lisha!) and I can honestly say that the soup base was just as good despite the fact that it’s not from actual meat! If you are a vegetarian, definitely give this place a try.
Cold Peach Jelly Sake
In depth review:
1// Chicken Karaage
Karaage (Japanese fried chicken) is always good no matter where you go and this place is no exception. This appetizer didn’t particularly stand out amongst other restaurants but regardless, good Karaage overall.
2// Cold Peach Jelly Sake
This item was pretty pricey ($9) for a small can but it was DELICIOUS. Also it was a really cool thing to try because the drink comes out in Jelly form!
I hope you liked this episode of Must Eat in Toronto! Talk to you all next week!! ❤
Long time no talk on here. I feel like I’ve been channeling all my energy to my new YouTube channel and I’m now trying to figure out what to write for my blog (that isn’t already covered via YouTube). Anyway I thought the perfect thing to write about next was about the Eye Envy Eye Lash Serum that I talked about in my latest YouTube video where I show you what my bare face looks likehow I applied my everyday makeup.
Before I go on and on about this product I just want to throw a disclaimer out there that this is not sponsored WHATSOEVER but if you are so kind to email them that you saw this review through me maybe they’ll actually sponsor me LOL.
Anyway… I’ve been using this product for years and I absolutely CANNOT live without it. If you know me for a long time you’ll know my lashes were non-existent. These really helped them grow longer and thicker. ALSO this can be used for your eyebrows as well (never done that b/c I have very bushy eyebrows #DontWantToTalkAboutIt #LeaveMeAlone).
I received so many questions from you guys so I thought that I would just make a blog post that puts all the questions together. Since I’m lazy af and love to refer you back to my platforms, the next time I receive a question I’m literally just gonna answer with my URL LOL. If I missed a question, lmk and I’ll quickly add to it.
ANYWAY ENOUGH BABBLING, LET’S GET TO IT!!!
WHERE TO GET IT:
You cannot buy this online through their site – you can only find it through authorized beautician stores (waxing places, nails, etc) so use their site to find the one closest to you!
The serum costs:
$75 for a bottle that will last 3 months
$99 for a bottle that will last 6 months
And if you’re Asian like me I’ll just tell you that the 6 month bottle is more worth it because you end up paying $16.50 per month rather than $25 per month. Also, when you first start using it, you will need to use it for awhile before you see results so it’s just the one that makes the most cents! 😉 (DID YOU GET MY PUN? DID YOU??? :D)
*Note: For the first month, use it daily until you see the results you want, then you can use it every other day
The reason I love this product is because of how natural it makes my lashes look (well duh, because they’re literally my lashes but longer but you know what I mean) and it’s better than the alternatives in the market. I tried extensions ONCE and I never did it again because I didn’t like how I couldn’t wash my face/hair when I first get them, how I couldn’t use oil-based make-up remover so I could barely wear eye shadow, and how it was SO expensive to maintain. Using false lashes were also difficult for me because it takes me forever to put it on and it ultimately didn’t look natural/professional enough at work. That being said, the serum was able to resolve all the issues I had because it was natural looking, quick to apply, and not as expensive as extensions and falsies (if you put them on everyday).
For me, I didn’t really see the results until maybe the third week or fourth week. The results were also a lot more obvious when I put on mascara, you can see exactly how much your lashes have grown! Like I said, I have used it for many years so I can tell you for a fact that this serum only really works if you do this everyday and you maintain it. When you first start out, you must apply it every day. After seeing the results you want, you also have to maintain it; this is where you can apply it every other day. I recommend the morning because a beautician told me that it’s when your hair follicles are more likely to grow. I tend to put this on before I do any other eye make up (you can see how I apply it in my tutorial).
If you don’t maintain it, you won’t be able to get the results you want because your lashes naturally fall off and therefore, the ones that have grown through the serum will fall off, leaving you with your natural length.
I’m so sorry I don’t have a before and after picture for you. Truthfully when I first started using it, I was still skeptical so I didn’t even think it would really work on my short ass lashes but by the time I realized it was working I was like, “damnit I fucked up… should have taken a before picture.” I KNOW …. I HAD ONE JOB AND I FAILED YOU ALL. Sorry guys 😥 I promise to do better next time. I’ll show you a picture I got off the internet for now LOL.
Anyway, I hope I answered most of your questions regarding price, whether or not it’s worth it, etc… if you have any more “technical” questions like how to apply (excuse me, like was my video not good enough for you?), you can find more answers in their FAQ section.
PS. If you haven’t already subscribed to my channel GO DO IT NOW 😀
To celebrate my 5 year friendaversary with Kristina, we decided to actually do something for the day rather than our usual pig out & drink out #IMadeThatUp #ImSoProud. I stumbled upon pictures of the flower field at Andrews’ Scenic Acres and decided that would be the perfect place to have our Sunday Funday. Anyway, after last week’s failed trip to a lavender farm and going to Scarborough Bluffs instead, I learned my lesson and decided to call ahead of time JUST TO MAKE SURE they’re opened and the flowers were still there. Unlike lavenders, these flowers are thankfully still in season (honestly how does anybody except some plant expert know what is in season and what is not?! LOL #NotMe) and the sun’s still holding up so I decided to drive us ALLLLLL THE WAY TO MILTON (reminds me of driving to Western which I should have done this weekend to go to HOCO… sigh…)
The farm also has a corn field which means you also have the option of picking corn. I wanted to do this SOOO BADLY (FYI I love corn I don’t know if you wanted to know that but I’m telling you anyway) but when we got there a lot of the corn were dead. You can tell that it’s been cooked by the sun :'(. I was also planning to buy it but it was soooo expensive like $1 each like honey, I usually buy mine for like 4 for $1 at Kingsfarm in Vancouver. Anyway, wow, this is turning into a corn rant. We didn’t walk out empty handed though because we took pictures instead 😉 #SeeWhatIDidThere.
After finishing up at the corn farm we walked back to the flower field to take pictures. We really wanted someone to take one of the two of us so (NO SHAME) we walked ALL THE WAY across the field literally hunting someone down just for a picture.
Hope you all had a nice weekend! Definitely check this farm out when you get the chance… it’s the perfect summer-fall transition activity 🙂
Got a couple of questions after posting about surfing on Instagram so I thought I’d make a post! Granted, I was definitely not the person who discovered this (thank you Alex, Emily W, Emily C, and Callie for the suggestion and Monisha for booking for us!!!) so I’m just here to relay the message so that all humans on earth can enjoy approximately $20CAN (it’s actually 15 euros) worth of 2 hours of surf rentals and lessons!!! (If you know something better and you’re hiding it from the world – I hate you.)
PS. Surfing in Tofino (Canada) is about $100 for the exact same thing so yes, this is a big deal.
HOW AND WHERE TO BOOK
Click here to Cascais Surf School & Camp’s website to see their rates and follow their instructions (in other words simply send them an email and see when they’re available!). I also realized after visiting the page that we got our rates even cheaper because we were students on exchange (#Erasmus LOL) but it’s cheap nonetheless!!
Not to boost their ego but they also have a 5 star rating on tripadvisor so…
WHERE IT IS…
The beach itself is not in Lisbon exactly – you have to train your ass to the beach. I’ve even left a few instructions:
#1 – Get from wherever you are (Airbnb, Hostel, Hotel, the street, the bush, etc) to the station: Cais do Sodré
tip: I would Uber there because Ubers in Lisbon are dirt cheap especially if you split with people. If not, WALK. It’s a nice scenery (not that I would know with all the Ubers but from what I’ve seen around and heard from other people…) and plus the city is not that big!
#2 – Buy a round-trip train ticket to Carcavelos (unless they’ve changed the destination, but this is where we were told to go)
From there, the beach is about a 5 minute walk!
Instructors were absolutely amazing (as you can see from their trip advisor review). They were extremely helpful and they don’t give up on you – EVEN IF YOU’RE GIVING UP ON YOURSELF LOL. They also learn your name within the first 5 minutes and they say it with their cute Portuguese accents (Liiiizaaaa!!!!). Which also means that if you screw up they yell your name in the middle of the ocean #NoLie #ButInACuteAndFunnyWay.
eg. *me trying to hop on my surfboard*
“NOOOO LIZZZAAAAAAA, THERE ARE PEOPLE IN FRONT OF YOU”
It was really fun (how basic can that statement be) – definitely lots of work but so worth it! 1000/1000 would recommend to friend. And non-friends.
FAQ (that I made up by myself so who knows)
ISN’T IT COLD?
Yes m’dear. The water is cold especially if you’re not going in the middle of summer in 30 degree weather. But have no fear, wet suits are here!! No lie, these wet suits will keep you so warm that you won’t even notice the coldness of the water.
ISN’T IT TIRING?
Also a yes. The three of us were sore for two days afterwards. One of us was sore all over, one of us was sore upper body, and the other one was sore just in the shoulders (not pointing at who is who ;D). So it really depends on who you are but don’t underestimate the work out that this gives you!
WHAT TO WEAR/BRING
Wear your bathing suit underneath already. Do not think to change into your bathing suit because the minute you get to that parking lot they already have wet suits and surfboards ready for you.
Hair tie (I was originally going to say for girls but with all the man-buns these days who knows)
GREAT ATTITUDE 😀 (I sound like a mother)
That’s about it, folks!
Hope y’all have a great time surfing in Portugal like we did!!!!
